Project Life: Week 17

What happened this week: This was an extra fun week as I headed down to LA for Lauren’s baby shower! Catching up with college friends, seeing family, and celebrating the new Smithski adventure – good times.

Photographers: For once I didn’t take all the pictures; my friend Alexis picked up my camera during the shower and made sure we got pictures of everything. Greg also took a few pictures of his weekend at home with the doodle. The vast majority are from my ‘real’ camera or Greg’s iPhone. I used my phone for a few photos.

Outside the Norm: I used a Design H insert since there were so many pictures I wanted to include. It’s half of a regular sheet protector so it blends in to the pictures below. It’s on the right in the first photo (the shower “rehearsal dinner”) and left in the second photo (cake, mimosa bar & happy family).

IMG_6009_edited-1I also finally finished the title page after scrapping my original digital album. The fillers all came with the Seafoam kit. I added the photos (same as from the digital version – the last 2011 pictures I had of each of us) and used some foam letters left over from Lauren’s shower decor to include 2013 and our one little word. I also bought new albums that are less ‘scrapbooky’ looking than the Project Life ones. I have this sitting on the coffee table and I like it a lot more now that it looks like a normal album.

IMG_6017_edited-1In other Project Life news, I decided to stop working on my 2012 album. I’m not sure there’s anything worse than going back in time and documenting with terrible pictures. Also, I really did not like the Olive kit which was not helping my motivation. Rather than continuing to spend the money and time finishing it, I’m going to admit defeat and move on. I can use my limited creative juices on making our house feel more like our home.

Lauren’s Baby Shower

Baby Smithski will be here before we know it (two months + one week!) so I was off to LA this weekend to shower his/her mama. Her mom graciously offered to host it in her home and help me, and two friends from college did favors, games, and flowers. It turned out super cute and a lovely time was had by all.

Very happy grandmas-to-be.

Project Life: Week Nine

I was feeling very springy last week, which is funny because the weather took a turn for the craptastic this week and it’s decidedly unspringy. But I went with and tried to make pages light and cheerful for the week. With daffodils blooming in our front yard, there’s no time for anything but happy. Those are daffodils, right?

I’m loving my date stamps. I’d thought about doing them at the beginning of the year and didn’t and finally splurged on the $4.99 to buy them. I’m really looking forward to Daylight Savings Time so I’ll have a chance of decent pictures on weeknights and not only on the weekend. The only other new item for this week is that I’m trying to make it less “me” and more “us” so I asked Greg to take a few pictures while he was in Denver so I can include moments from his week as well.

Project Life: Week Seven

When I sat down to work on week seven yesterday, I realized I had taken very few pictures this weekend. I made it work, but it’s a little on the boring side. I used the February kit I bought (the last thing I bought before I realized I needed to stop buying kits). Even though it’s not my style – the pink, the hearts, the mass amounts of purple I didn’t use – I had fun with it since it was Valentine’s Day. The background is from Seafoam and the heart graphic with the verse on it I found on Etsy via Pinterest and recolored in PSE to match the colors of the kit. I was so lacking in pictures I had to borrow from the Ray’s Boathouse and Crate & Barrel websites.

I didn’t manage a picture of myself this week. There was an incident last night that involved trying to capture a moment of zen on the bathroom floor with nail polish, my kindle, a glass of vino, and freshly painted bright pink toenails. Instead of an artsy picture, the moment ended with me cleaning pinot noir out of my heater vent.

Project Life: Week Five

Week five wasn’t the most exciting week we’ve had around here, but it had it’s good moments. I used the Seafoam kit, which I think is the most modern and least traditional scrapbook-like of the ones I’ve bought. It’s all clean lines of very calm colors. I’ve gone a little crazy buying kits (I think I have five) hence one of my February goals. I stumbled across the baby editions today and being able to document all those little cards almost makes me want a baby.

Anyway, here’s week five. I wish I could figure out how to post the two pages smaller and side by side like everyone else does, I guess there is a limit to my craftiness after all.

Project Life: Finishing Up the Redo

Yay for being sick, I got time to convert my title page and weeks one and two to my new format. Ugh. Mostly said with sarcasm.

All I did for the title page was fix my cropped pictures now that I know how to correctly use PSE and add a background. As I started to create my book on Shutterfly, I noticed that the tan background looks really boring page in and page out, so I’m adding backgrounds. I don’t particularly love it because they look a little more scrapbooky now, but that’s better than boring I guess. Made all with the Clementine kit and a freebie for the welcome 2013. In fact, all the pages here were done with Clementine since it was the first one I bought.

PL_2013_Title

Redone Week One – I added a background and updated most of the text to be one of three fonts. I was going a little font crazy before and it’s much easier and quicker to put together a week spread the more streamlined things are. I also changed the right side to be template A. Unless I have a really good reason not to, I’m only going to use template A going forward for both pages. Again with the streamlined -> quick and easy. I changed up the title, added the calendar, and added the week in review card. If I keep all three of those in every spread, it’s three cards that are already done… streamline…

Week Two – I LOVED the way I had fixed our Portland trip pictures, so I made an exception to using template A and having the calendar / week in review in their normal spots (plus this was already done so it really didn’t matter). I fixed the title card, added background / calendar / week in review, and updated the fonts. Oh, and added a picture of my nephew from that week because I can’t get enough of his smiling cheeks.

Project Life: Redone

I seem to work with people who love to come to the office sick and after December’s flu I’ve now come down with a terrible sore throat. What’s weird is that I really don’t have any other symptoms, but the sore throat is one of the worst I’ve had. Sigh. While working on my Project Life last night I finally came up with a format I really like. Which of course means I have to go back and redo the first four weeks. Luckily things clicked for me in week five! I redid the third and fourth weeks this morning while pouting that I can’t have any weekend fun. I’m desperately trying to feel better by tomorrow so we can still go forward with our planned Super Bowl party. I am both looking forward to have friends over AND I need something going on to document (I’m mostly joking with that last part). I hope your Saturday is a little more fun than mine!PL_2013_Week3A

Impromptu Saturday Night

One of the best things about our life not being in hyper mode anymore is that we aren’t scheduled down to the hour all the time. We had no plans last night and the doodle is at Roberta and Don’s for the weekend so we thought about going to a movie. We must have really had nothing pressing for me to suggest going to a movie. When Greg’s childhood friend Zach called to say he and his girlfriend were in town for the night and had dinner plans with another couple that the guys are friends with from college, we were actually able to meet up and have dinner with them. They were going to The Crab Pot, a totally touristy restaurant that I’ve been wanting to try for a while. Zach’s girlfriend is Turkish (though she’s been living in Atlanta for several years working on her PhD) and has never been to Seattle, so was excited to try out the seafood. I’m not convinced their food is anything local though; they only have a handful of locations and two are in the Palm Springs area, not exactly a mecca of fresh seafood.

IMG_1714Greg’s worst nightmare: eating with his hands with no wet napkins.

IMG_1715

Apple ginger cider plus crab, mussels, clams, shrimp and sausage. It was good, but very touristy. Not sure I need to go back but it was something different and the company was great.

IMG_1723

Chelene suggested we try Hot Cakes after dinner, a new dessert bar that opened in our old neighborhood. Greg and I shared a boozy shake, the Drunken Sailor. It was good, but I am really, really done with sugar and overeating and very much looking forward to starting the Whole30 on 1/1.

I’m about to head out to hot yoga then set up for our New Years Eve Eve party, but first I’m giving myself a few extra layers. I managed to get gum in my hair while washing dishes this morning. Sometimes I am amazed at my own abilities – Greg asked how it happened and I really don’t know. One minute I was chewing gum and the next it was in my hair. I hope your Sunday does not involve and self haircuts.

Wrapping up a Crazy Summer

I can’t believe I’m sitting here on the couch with my HUSBAND next to me. Where did the summer go? This seemed like a good time to look back at the Summer Bucket List I wrote way back in May. It turns out I love a seasonal bucket list (shocking, I know). This worked so much better for me than setting New Year goals that I forget about by Valentine’s Day. I think I’ll keep borrowing Holly’s idea, but I have a few tweaks to make for a Fall list. First I am going to pack and head to Mexico for a week. 🙂

Social

Host a wedding wine tasting party – Success! We had a lot of fun with friends (12 people showed up!) and actually found that a few of the pricier bottles were really not good, while the house cab took second place overall.

Have friends over for a BBQ – It’s kind of cheating because our good friends Talia and James moved into our building at the beginning of the summer, but we all got together for a few BBQs, so it was a success. This particular BBQ was the weekend after we picked Alfred up from Spokane and if I remember correctly they hadn’t quite moved in yet, so it totally counts as having them over. I don’t even remember Alfred being that small.

Beauty and Style

Wear a dress/skirt to work everyday for a week – I have worn a ton of dresses and skirts, but haven’t managed to do it for a full week. And it probably won’t happen since I won’t be back to work until October.

Buy and wear white denim – Done and done, and I love it! I got a dressier pair of white pants and love them so much I tried to find a more casual pair too, but never found any that fit well. Next summer for sure.

Start wearing glasses more than contacts – I pretty much wear my glasses Monday – Friday and sometimes even on the weekends. My eyes feel so much better, totally worth it. At some point I’d like to get a second pair of glasses, but probably not until insurance will pay, so like in two years.

Travel

Go to my BACHELORETTE party! – It was awesome and you can read about it here.

Go on my HONEYMOON! – Countdown: one day!

Visit LA for my bridal shower and Becky’s baby shower. – Done and done. I would say I will post about it, but probably not going to happen!

Day trip to somewhere new in Washington State – We visited lots of new parks with the puppy, but we never left Seattle for a new-t0-us location.

Weekend trip to Lake Chelan – We spent the weekend in the Chelan condo for Labor Day, after thinking we wouldn’t make it out this summer. It was super relaxing and we did pretty much nothing but read, watch TV (his dad has cable!), and play with the puppy. We aslo did do a weekend trip to Wenatchee earlier in the summer as well.

Home

Plan and throw a WEDDING! – I’m Mrs. Martin! I even have the tote bag to prove it!

Get a PUPPY! – We did, and boy has it been an adventure. Here’s the adorable Alfred monthly from May – August.

Food

Pick berries at a U-Pick berry farm – Nope, not even once have I contemplated going.

Make something preserved with the berries – Hard to make anything with berries you didn’t end up picking.

Make a new cocktail with each of the herbs growing on the balcony. – Over the course of the summer I made strawberry infused vodka sodas with mint and spiked basil lemonade.

Enjoy outdoor brunch at a new restaurant – We tried a new brunch spot (Local 360) that was tasty, but sadly the morning we went it wasn’t quite warm enough yet to eat outdoors. They have a great patio, so it wasn’t for lack of trying!

Fitness

Run a half marathon – So we paid and trained for this, but it didn’t happen. Talia got injured in a soccer game two days before the race, and when I woke up on race morning to pouring rain, well… there was just no way I was going to go do 13.1 miles alone in the cold rain. My heart isn’t in running like it used to, so for now I’m retired. I had a good run with two full marathon and four halfs. I enjoy walking and hiking with the puppy and doing CrossFit at home these days. Maybe I’ll get back into at some point, but for now I’ve promised Greg I will not spend any more money signing up for races.

Beat my 2011 Warrior Dash time – I really thought the two fitness goals would be the sure things. Funny how that works. By the time Warrior Dash weekend came around we were just too tired to drive the hour each way and participate. It had been a long week for everyone, including Alfred who got stuck in his crate for a good portion of it. Last thing we wanted to do was leave him home alone for a good chunk of Sunday, too. We went on a family hike and finished up with push-ups at home. Again with the promise to not sign up for races. 🙂

Bachelorette Party

I had my bachelorette party down in Sonoma the last weekend of July. Vanessa, Kathy, Lauren, Talia, Alyssa and Julie all joined me and we had the most relaxing, fun weekend. It was fun to have a mix of college, San Francisco, and Seattle friends to celebrate with.

I got very excited a few weeks before when this arrived.

I had my bride goblet to drink wine out of while we were at the house all weekend.

Dessert on Friday night was one of my favorites – carrot cake. This just happened to be a bright pink one with Greg lying seductively on it.

We spent Friday night relaxing, drinking wine, making a Mexican fiesta (it was all my favorite food!), sitting by the fire we lit, and catching up. And taking (not very good) self time photos.

Saturday day was for wine tasting with our old pal John (he also drove us around for Vanessa’s 30th two years ago).

Saturday evening we did more of the same. And I got to open presents. My friends are so sweet. Until I almost went through security with a few items that would have been on the humiliating side.

This weekend was perfectly planned by the best friend and MOH a girl could have. THANK YOU!

Cheers to the best weekend! Can’t wait for an excuse to do it again – and there are a few good excuses coming up soon!
