Project 365: February Favorite

On Sunday morning we went for a walk near Julie and Jamie’s place with their elderly beagle, Regal. The walk we took on a “mountain” (the East Coast has a different definition of what makes a mountain) had view points where you could see a gorgeous panoramic of midtown Manhattan. I already want to go back for a very New York weekend: a boutique hotel near Central Park, fall leaves, hot chocolate. Hint hint, honey – this would be a great first anniversary trip! 😉

It took this picture over President’s Day weekend when Greg and I were visiting with Jamie and Julie in New Jersey. Five months later, I’m still really wanting to go back to New York for another weekend, preferably on the way to London. If only airfare over New Years wasn’t so expensive!

5 Best Decisions

Inspired again by a post from Holly, I spent my drive home thinking about the five best decisions I’ve made as an adult. And here they are. As of this moment in time. Totally subject to change.

1. Moving to San Francisco

In January 2004 I moved to the Bay Area not knowing one single person. The next 7.5 years were filled with growing amazing friendships, building a career I’m proud of, and memories of so many good times. The City was the best place to spend my twenties and looking back I can’t imagine having done it anywhere else. I laughed, I cried, I paid way too much to live alone in the Marina. I had the time of my life.

2. Moving to Seattle

All good things must come to an end and by 2011 my love affair with SF had gone cold. It was no longer the perfect city where dreams are made; it was cold, windy, expensive, crowded, and a career rat race. The city hadn’t changed, I’d just moved on. I wanted space, to slow down a little, the ability to start thinking about being a mom, a house of my own. Our engagement and my move to Seattle couldn’t have been more perfect timing. Minus the weather, Seattle is everything I love about SF without 90% of what I was tired of.

3. Starting to Save Early

Fresh out of college and into my first ‘big girl’ job, I started saving. It wasn’t a ton at that time, but it was something. And I’ve continued to make saving a priority. I look at it this way: Instead of purchasing a fancy new car or wearing the most expensive shoes in the room, I’ve been buying my financial independence. I’m not saying I don’t spend (please see #1: expensive apartment in Marina), but I stay well below my means and I’m happy there. I can walk away from it all tonight and be fine for a while. Knowing I can do that has been such a freedom in the last few years.

4. Traveling Alone

Through most of my twenties I didn’t have a significant other to travel with. I had lots of boyfriends, but they were never the ‘go do something type’. Which is funny, because I like to do things. I digress. I wanted to see the world, so I did. And I have memories that I will cherish. I learned to be by myself for two weeks, I learned to explore on my own. And I learned that traveling with someone you love is way more awesome. A close second to traveling alone is going to Spain with my family in 2010. Things have changed SO F’N MUCH in the less than two years it’s been since that trip and I love the memories of the last time it was really just the five of us. We have so many awesome memories to make going forward as just the 12+ of us, but Spain I won’t forget.

5. Saying “Yes” to My Engineer

Maybe this is a a odd, non-romantic way of saying I love him to others, but we’re both so. damn. analytical, he’d know what I mean.  We are different; we have different beliefs, we communicate differently, we see things differently like any two humans do. But we just get each other. There are so many things he loves about me that former loves have merely tolerated. And probably likewise for him. When I say “I do” in 109 days, I will have made the 6th best decision of my adult life.

Meet Alfred

I’m giving up on catching up on my blog and just starting with the present.

We’ve had Alfred for just over one week now and wow did I underestimate the amount of work that goes into keeping a puppy. He is absolutely adorable, enjoys a good cuddle when he’s tired, and keeps us laughing, so it’s worth it. He’ll stop getting up before 5am someday.

A side effect that completely did not think about is that Ballard feels like a real neighborhood now. People stop and talk to us all the time and we’ve even learned the names of some other residents in our condo. It’s almost difficult to take him for a walk with every. single. person. wanting to stop and pet the teddy bear.

First picture, just a little while after we picked him up from the farm in Elk, WA.

First bath. Not his favorite thing and he looked so tiny when all his fur was wetted down.

Hanging out at Grandpa Ken and Cathy’s place on his first day with us.

Relaxing with Talia during a BBQ.

The cutest little puppy face ever.

9 weeks old.

The Sounders

Greg and I bought Seattle Sounders season tickets this year with our friends James and Talia. It turns out our seats are great and I enjoy soccer more than I thought I would. The Sounders won the first game 3-1 against Toronto. Looking forward to the rest of the season, especially games in the sun come summer.

The first game was on St. Patrick's Day, so instead of buying expensive cheap beer we just Irish'd up our cups a bit. I went with Bailey's, Greg went with Jameson. Very festive of us.

Contrary to what this picture might have you think, Greg was actually excited to be at the game.

Talia and James. Talia is also my running buddy, we're doing the Seattle Rock n Roll Half Marathon together in June.

Goal! Sounders win 3-1. Hat trick by Estrada, and free hair cuts for everyone!

New York, New York

Wow, I fell off the blog wagon big time in February. Time to pick back up.

Over President’s Day Weekend Greg and I spent time with my good friends Jamie and Julie. The J’s recently moved from DC to Westfield, an adorable town in New Jersey. The moved from SF to DC right as Greg and I started dating, so he had never met them. I wanted to make sure we remedied that before the big day.

I flew out Friday afternoon, arriving around 11. Greg was already with J&J as he had been in NYC for work all week. We caught up and watched some bad TV then went to bed. The real fun started Saturday.

We woke up and went to a local deli for breakfast. I turned down the bagel that came with my omlette, which was a total no-no. I’m pretty sure they are going to have to find a new place for weekend breakfasts. After filling up, we walked to the train station and headed into the city. We got off near the WTC and checked out the new Freedom Tower from a distance. We then walked across town and walked over the Brookly Bridge. It was cool, but all having lived in SF, we agreed it’s hard to beat walking over the Golden Gate.

We enjoyed our afternoon dining on pizza and sampling beers at the (over crowded and not that exciting) Brooklyn Brewery. We stayed in Brooklyn for dinner later then headed back home. On the way Julie decided it would be a good time to try one of the tall boys, like she sees people with all the time on the train. I think Jamie was done with us at this point.

On Sunday after breakfast (I accepted my bagel this time) we went for a walk with Regal, their elderly begal. Regal and I used to do lots of walking together in SF. We had beautiful panoramic views of Manhattan. Sadly the whole weekend I was thinking about my Project 365 pictures that I hardly took any people photos. I’m going to start working on that.

We had a great time and it was so good to spend time with people I’ve known for what seems like forever. Can’t wait to see them in Seattle in September!

Valentine’s Day

I’m not a huge lover of Valentine’s Day in the romantic sense, but I do think it’s a fun time of year to do nice things for others.

Greg and I got a Valentine in the mail from Mia, so cute!

I am super excited to be an aunt come May and couldn’t resist getting Avery a Valentine’s gift. Every little girl needs something monogramed and a giant bow, right? (I think I peruse too many blogs of Southern women as I’m pretty sure I nor my sister ever owned anything monogramed or wore a big bow.)

And lastly, as I was walking around Target last night I saw this pink scarf with navy blue giraffes and immediately thought of my friend Kathy. It is just the sort of thing she loves, so I picked it up for her. Who doesn’t love a surprise scarf in the mail?

Winter Fun

Yesterday we went out to Snoqualmie for an afternoon of tubing. It was our friend James’ birthday and his girlfriend Talia organized a fun afternoon for him. We finished it up with a pizza party and homemade ice cream cake back in Seattle.

On the way out we stopped outside of North Bend for BBQ - so good. Definitely the best I've ever had.

Talia coming off the run.

Can you believe this looker is gonna be my husband soon?

Beautiful day back in Seattle.

Grain free pizza we enjoyed while watching the Super Bowl.

Birthday Recap

While I still have trouble accepting that I’m now 31, it was a great week of birthday celebrations.

Last Sunday we met Greg’s family for lunch and Roberta surprised me with a gift. She gave me a beautiful Kate Spade vase. I can’t wait to display it in our new house at some point.

On Thursday, my team at work surprised me with a cake and a round of Happy Birthday. It was especially shocking as I did not know that anyone knew when my birthday was. That night Greg gave me my present (we don’t really buy each other presents, we prefer to go out to a fancy dinner instead). We had some champagne that our CEO sent us for the holidays to ring in another year. Here I am in my new “T-Rex Hates Push-ups” t-shirts. This will be making it’s debut at the gym soon!

Friday night I got home early from work to presents from my sister and my parents – fun kitchen toys and bathing suit coverups to get excited about Mexico in September! Later that night we went out for my birthday dinner. Greg picked El Gaucho, a steakhouse that reminded me of restaurants you see in the show Mad Men. We had such a fun date night and the food was amazing. We had spicy shrimp to start, followed by steaks with mashed potatoes, and a few bites of a sundae that they sent out for my birthday.

And finally, on Saturday night we had dinner with our friends, the Kays. Kii’s birthday is next week, so Greg and I picked up cupcakes on the way. After dinner at our new favorite Ballard restaurant, Root Table, we headed to a new Scottish pub, Macleod’s, for a drink and to share the cupcakes. We split three of them and left the fourth for our cocktail waitress. It’s nice to have a non-dive bar that isn’t too loud to have a conversation in the neighborhood. And with that statement, I guess I’m officially an old lady.

Feliz Ano Nuevo!

Greg hosted his 8th annual New Year’s Eve Eve party on Friday night at The Spectator in Queen Anne. Fifteen or so people showed to catch up after the holidays over karaoke and jello shots. (I picked a good night to be DD. Jello shots are never a good thing.) We ended the night at Dick’s and I got to try my first burger from the famous Seattle establishment.

We went to Corynn’s NYE party for the second year in a row. This year she decided to host a ‘dress like your drink’ contest. Greg made his jalapeño margaritas (which I finally got to try!) and we ordered ponchos, sombreros and mustaches from Amazon. We ended up winning the first place prize.

The best part of our costumes were that they were easily removable for heading out to view the Space Needle fireworks at midnight. Happy New Year! I am so excited for 2012, it’s going to be a big, crazy year for us.

It’s Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas

We’ve had a few more early Christmas celebrations this year.

Over the weekend we flew down to LA to visit Lauren and Stu and attend their 4th Annual Christmas Party. This year the theme was English Supper and we made massive amounts of roasted root veggies, mashed potatoes, and beef. It was so much fun catching up with friends from ADPi I haven’t seen in years. As a bonus I got to see Joey, Brittany, Becky and Arek, too! Nearly fifty people showed up this year – the Smithski’s really know how to throw a party. In a new twist this year, they asked everyone to bring canned goods – they filled four or five boxes for a local organization.

We spent the rest of the weekend lazing about visiting.

I forgot all about taking pictures and only got one the entire weekend – of Greg squeezing lemon juice into a punch bowl.

Wednesday night we had an early Christmas dinner with Roberta since I will be in Denver for the holiday. She was very generous and had fun buying for a girl for the first time. Among other things, she gave me the soft hat and bathrobe I am modeling below.

Next up is the Martin family Christmas party followed by a trip to Denver. In 2012 I think we’re going to work on our overscheduling during the holidays!
