life, interrupted

I had all sorts of plans to get things done after work this week and they all seem to be thwarted for this reason or that. I feel about as tired as this guy. IMG_3116

Our dryer broke at some point between when we left for southern California this weekend and when we returned home. I realized this yesterday after I stripped all the sheets of both beds. And when I had a wet load sitting in the dryer and another wet load just started in the wash. So I got creative.

My eleven month old nephew might have to clean the bathtub himself this weekend. So far my get ready for guests to-do list doesn’t have much checked off on it. I guess it’s just going to be one of those weeks!

Project Life: Week 31

Week 31 (July 29 – August 4)

IMG_6506_edited-2

What happened this week: We had a pretty normal work week with Greg home. I think we were both home three evenings in a row, which might be a 2013 record. Over the weekend Greg headed to Suncadia for Guys Golf Weekend. I stayed in Seattle and enjoyed lots of time with girl friends and got some more house decorating tackled. My MIL had Alfred all weekend – on Saturday I left the house at 11:30 am and wasn’t home until 11pm. I don’t know the last time that happened.

Photography: With the exception of the house photo and the pizza photo, everything is from our iPhones. Greg took about half the photos in the insert.

Proof that there is no such thing as perfection in PL. I got a new date stamp and clearly it is above my intelligence level.

Out of the norm: I’ve been wanting to do a ‘day in the life’ spread for a while. I think it will be fun to do them every once in a while and see how life changes over time. Greg was totally on board and sent my six or seven pictures throughout his day on Tuesday. I picked from the 20ish pictures we ended up with and created the insert.

Untitled-1_edited-1

Because we were taking so many photos on Tuesday, I decided to go with one large photo for the right hand side. (Credit for this idea goes to Elise, I believe I first saw this when she did it to bookend a week in the life spread.) Our house seemed like the perfect subject. I haven’t taken any photos of it from the outside and it’s definitely been central to our lives the last eight months. I love larger photos split across multiple pockets. And I love our house.

Project Life: Week 30

Week 30 (July 22 – July 28)

IMG_6422_edited-2

And now we’re at week 30. Documenting these summer months has been and continues to be so much fun. It might seem silly that I’m taking so many very similar pictures, but there’s a method to the madness. It’s no secret I struggle through February to May living in the PNW. My hope is that next year when I’m having a hard time I’ll be able to look through all these weeks. I’ll remember that for a pretty decent chunk of the year there is nowhere better to live, that we eat so many meals outside, that it stays light out for 18 hours a day, that we walk everywhere, that we BBQ nonstop, and that the sun shines every day.

IMG_6428_edited-2

What happened this week: We had friends over for a BBQ and used our fire pit for the first time to make s’mores. We had new bedroom furniture delivered and after an epic trip to IKEA filled rooms with lamps and other accessories. And we got outside as much as possible. I had dinner with a good friend from San Francisco who was in town for work.

IMG_6427_edited-2Photography: About 50/50 between my camera and phone. I’m pretty sure I took all the pictures.IMG_6430_edited-1

Out of the norm: I created a little insert of the three parks we visited this week. I cut the “Remember This” off of a journal card and stapled it to the insert to use as a tab.

IMG_6424_edited-1 IMG_6432_edited-1

Supplies used: Seafoam project life kit; the Today I and July calendar cards, We Were Here badge, and letter stickers are from the Studio Calico July kit; the See Go Do card is from an add-on kit to the July SC kit but looks like it’s no longer available.

I finally figured out the settings required to open the pictures larger and in a new tab. They should all be clickable now.

the secret to ikea

we learned the secret to an enjoyable ikea trip this weekend : go when the weather is really nice. it’s more than worth it to lose a few hours of seattle summer for a stress-free trip to the giant blue building. IMG_2921_edited-1

we ended up with two carts, even though half the items on our list didn’t end up working out.
IMG_2922_edited-1

fiddle leaf fig, i love you.IMG_2929-1_edited-1

but the real winner of the day : my new turquoise craft cart.

IMG_2927_edited-1

fun new lamp for the living room. IMG_2925_edited-1

and proof we didn’t waste the whole day in ikea. another five mile walk around green lake with the doodle. there are so many lily pads and not a cloud in the sky.

summer goal : fire & s’mores

we had the foremans and kays over for a bbq on friday night, the perfect start to a weekend.IMG_2914_edited-1the previous owners left wood in the fireplace and i was determined to have a least one fire this summer. greg did not disappoint and got an awesome fire going.

IMG_2915_edited-1

my extra credit goal (what, you don’t have those?) was to make s’mores.
IMG_2908_edited-1

cameron made himself not one but two s’mores. it was our first time having friends’ kids over to our house. apparently grapefruit pellegrino in a coffee mug is not a six year old’s idea of a soda treat. lesson learned.IMG_2910_edited-1

this city girl taught these country people how to roast marshmallows the LA way : on coat hangers. IMG_2913

summer perfection.

bedroom furniture

our new bedroom furniture arrived and i am in love. IMG_6381_edited-1-1

we ordered an armoire (so greg can move his clothes back in our room) and a six drawer dresser from room & board. IMG_6387_edited-2

aren’t they beautiful? if you don’t think so, please don’t tell us. we’re keeping them for the next twenty years.

IMG_6382-1_edited-1

the natural light in our bedroom is very minimal, so these pictures aren’t great. the wood looks a little more red than it really is. the pieces are all cherry.IMG_6383-1_edited-1

the style is so different from the rest of our house. i love the lighter wood. i hope to someday change the dark wood upstairs out, but no time soon. IMG_6388_edited-1for now i’m just going to enjoy the little oasis i’m turning our bedroom into.

the garage

I’ve mentioned it more than once, but when we first moved into our house we were overwhelmed with pretty much everything. Puppy, wedding, buying a house, moving, renting out the condo, new clients, major work travel changes. We’ve slowly come out of the crazy and over the last few months have channeled most of our spare time (ha!) into make this first house of ours our home. That and watching the first five seasons of HIMYM in record time.

I am thisclose to being able to state that we are done furniture shopping and share pictures. We have a big delivery today, a trip to IKEA planned for this weekend, and I’m stalking the West Elm website waiting for nightstands to go on sale. Does anyone else have issues buying furniture if you know at some point it will go on sale? Greg is of the mindset that we need nightstands, but them now. I refuse since I know at some point in the next 12 months they will be 20% off.

Greg had one project he really wanted to work on, our garage. I wonder why?

photo_edited-1

My focus this summer has been on personalizing the inside of our house and getting the front yard under control. Since both of these are well on their way with still six weeks of summer to go, and we needed a route for the delivery guys to bring in furniture this week, I said the words Greg has been waiting to here for months, “honey, let’s attack the garage this weekend.”

So we did. I’m not sure there’s anything better than starting and finishing a project with my favorite person.

Project Life: Week 15

For the first time this year, I’m pretty behind. Two or three weeks at this point. April was a long, hard month and I finally gave up on trying to keep up until things calmed down. There’s nothing wrong with doing it down the road, I just lose details of the week’s stories the longer I go before putting the spread together. My memory definitely isn’t what it used to be.

My plan is to enjoy the amazing weather we are having this week (fact: yesterday, Seattle had the highest temp in the nation, tied with Phoenix) and when the low 60s and rain roll back in on Sunday, hole up with some coffee and get myself caught up.

Week 15. I just stepped outside to take photos of this week’s spread and cringed. The week we decided to paint the living room. Awful times a million! My MIL sent a few pictures of Alfred digging up her backyard. And taco salad makes a second appearance in 2013. I might have also eaten it for dinner tonight. IMG_2147_edited-1IMG_2149_edited-1 IMG_2150_edited-1

March Goals

March GoalsIt must the the feeling of spring in our front yard making me optimistic that I can tackle this list in March. Ten just seemed like a nice round number.

  1. Use my pressure cooker. (leftover from February)
  2. Clean out the garage. (leftover from February)
  3. Get to the gym 17 times.
  4. Paint the living room.
  5. Stand at work for one hour a day.
  6. Take my vitamins daily.
  7. Consume no dairy.
  8. Go on a gift card date with one of the many restaurant gift cards we have in our stash.
  9. Watch one of the Best Picture nominees (we’ve only seen Lincoln) & use our popcorn machine.
  10. Buy a BBQ for the front yard.

February Goals

1. Clean out the garage. We’re getting there, but it’s nowhere near done. All the recycling from moving and opening wedding gifts is finally gone so that’s a good step, but we still have boxes to unpack, Goodwill runs to make, and shelves to put up and organize.

2. Average eight hours of sleep per night. I actually made a lot of progress with sleep. Now that I have my Lark, I know I need to schedule about nine hours for sleep in order to get eight (it’s so awesome being a crappy sleeper). I’m getting to bed earlier on the weeknights and trying not to schedule any early morning weekend activities so I can sleep in. In general I’m not drinking much these days which is helping me stay asleep throughout the night.

3. Use my pressure cooker. Nope.

4. Buy no new Project Life supplies. I think I bought a few things, but nothing like January. Progress?

5. Get to the gym 15 times. I made it 12, or an average of three times per week. Not too bad, considering we were out of town one weekend and I started the month off with the flu.

I’m liking these monthly goals over yearly resolutions so I think I’ll keep it up. Time to figure out the March goals.
