Project Life: Week 26

Week 26 (June 24th – June 30th)

How is it possible half the year is already past us? It seems like it’s gone by so quickly, but then again when I look back to weeks from January and February they seem like a long time ago. IMG_2809_edited-1

What happened this week: The biggest event of the week was Greg and I traveling to the east coast to attend the retreat of our Hartford office. We spent a a day on Cape Cod and a day in Boston. It was a quick trip, but fun!20130707-172848.jpg

Photography: I think I have to admit that for the time being, I’m an iPhone photographer. Another week with only photos from my phone. I love my camera, but it’s summer and the weather is great and I don’t want to think about it all to much. I just want to be able to snap pictures for memories and the iPhone is perfect for that.

IMG_2811_edited-1Out of the Norm: Quite a few things, actually. I only used our travel pictures for this week, I didn’t include anything from the early part of the week. I mixed the format up by using a different design sheet protector for the right side. I (unintentionally) took several feet pictures. I’ve started to include more writing about our life on the journal cards rather than describing each picture. It’s pretty clear that our feet are in the sand, that we were in Hyannis (no Kennedy spottings, darn!), etc. When I go back to the early months of this year I’ve literally added descriptions for every single photo and it seems kind of silly now. So I’m trying instead to include more about where we are in our life and what’s going on that isn’t captured in photos. The blurred out RECORDED card has details of some nice recognition Greg got at work that doesn’t need to be posted on the internet. And lastly, this might be one of the few weeks that doesn’t have a single picture of the doodle.

Project Life: Week 25

Week 25 (June 17th – 23rd)

20130707-154945.jpg

What happened this week: This was the week of Green Lake. We took two long walks with Alfred and on the second one we went to, around, and from the lake. It turned out to be just over five miles and he was exhausted once we were home. When we bought our house last December we always talked about how we could take him for walks around the lake once the weather was nicer and it’s so much fun actually doing it now.

20130707-154904.jpg

Photography: Pretty sure every picture is from my iPhone and I definitely took them all. Greg was home with us all week so he didn’t have any travel related pictures to add. Most of our pictures are from walking and Greg is usually in charge of handling the doodle on walks while I play photographer and treat producer.

Out of the Norm: Nothing new on these pages.

Project Life: Week 24

20130702-171206.jpg

What happened this week: It continues to feel like summer and I continue to love it. We did lots of BBQing and I got to use one of my Christmas presents from Greg, a knife skills class. We spent most of the weekend on the Eastside enjoying the weather.

20130702-171154.jpg

Photography: This week is mostly my iPhone. I’m seeing a trend as the weather is nicer and I’m having more fun with the fantastic lens on the 5. Getting out the big camera might become a winter hobby. Greg got a picture during a round of golf with the guys, my MIL took a photo of Alfred enjoying the fresh air, and I took the rest.

20130702-171217.jpgOut of the Norm: I tried my hand at making my own filler card. I had the cute ampersand stamp and wrote variations of Greg and Alfred between their two pictures. I ❤ my boys!

Project Life: Weeks 22 & 23

My second to last week of catching up. Next week I’ll have last week’s and this week’s, and then going forward I’ll just have the previous week to share every week. Did you follow?

Week 22 (May 27 – Jun 2)

IMG_6210_edited-1

What happened this week: We went to Eastern WA for the first time this summer. It’s one of my favorite things about living up here. We usually have no plans other than to roam the orchard and hang out at the lake. And it’s warm and sunny. Alfred learned to swim this trip on the orchard river, so we’re really excited to take him out to the lake next time. We will be back soon and I can’t wait.

IMG_6211_edited-1

Photographers: Combo of iPhone and DSLR. Greg took a picture for me during each round of golf he played this week (once with Jon, once with my Dad in CO). A friend took the picture of us gym girls out watching a band.

IMG_6213_edited-1

Outside the Norm: I used the “I LOVE [      ]” stamp that I got from this blog/store. In case I haven’t mentioned it: I love summer.

IMG_6217_edited-1

Insert: During the month of May I kept up with the Instagram photo a day group and since this was the last week of May I included the photos as an insert. I used coin pouches from Amazon (I got the idea from a few blogs, I’m no craft genius) and used the remaining squares to write the prompts for the days. It looks nowhere near as cute as I had envisioned, but like everything else Project Life, if it’s not perfect I just move on and let it be.

 Week 23 (June 3 – June 9)

IMG_6215_edited-1

What happened this week: This was a very normal week and Greg was home (which isn’t so normal, but is starting to be more normal – yay!). We spent most of the weekend working on the part of the front yard that is within the gate. We got 90% of the way there. Since my goal for the summer is to get the front yard to a point of maintenance, I think we’re doing pretty good.

IMG_6215_edited-1

Photographers: They were all me and mostly from my phone.

IMG_6216_edited-1

Outside the Norm: I took a panorama on my phone at the Sounders game then printed it 4 x 12 to fill two 4×6 slots. I wasn’t able to crop it down to the full panorama (it would have cut too much off the top or bottom), but it is still a fun new way to capture a game photo. I also used the TimerCam app a few times to get shots with me/us in them.

Project Life: Weeks 20 & 21

I’m catching up now on weeks that I’ve done at home. It’s taking me a little while to get the hang of the new printer, so you’ll notice a lot of the photos are not the exact right size. Photo paper and ink are expensive though, so I’m not redoing anything that’s not perfect.

Week 20 (May 13 – 19)

IMG_6196_edited-1

What happened this week: Lots of working on the house. I love, love, love that it’s taking shape and starting to feel more “us” now. Also, after two years in storage my owl mat is back in front of a door. I don’t know why exactly, but man I love that thing.

Photographers: I took all the photos. For once I think I used my DSLR more than my iPhone. But considering this was almost a month ago, I really don’t remember.

Outside the Norm: I stopped date stamping everything. 1) It took forever, 2) I really don’t think years from now it will matter if something happened on the 14th or 16th of May 2013, and 3) I thought it was kind of taking away from the pictures. I kept telling myself I wouldn’t do it next year, but then I realized I am allowed to stop doing something mid year.

Insert: I had several photos of my new adventure with indoor plants and working in the front yard, so I included them as an insert. (A month later, I can report that everything is still alive!)

Week 21 (May 20 – 26)

IMG_6200_edited-1

What happened this week: Aside from normal weekday stuff, we traveled to LA for the weekend. We spent one day with friends and the next day with family, celebrating Avery’s first birthday!

Photographers: I took all the photos (minus the group shot at the winery) and almost everything is from my phone.

Outside the Norm: Nothing really. I think I used too many photos though and don’t really love the look of it. I think two small photos and two inserts per side is probably the best ratio.

Insert: One insert from our day with friends in Malibu. Maybe overkill, but I had too many cute photos of Avery and Maks to not do a full page on the birthday party. (Mia and Anna are making less of an appearance because the party was at a kid’s gym and they were having way too much fun for me to take their picture. Poor Maks, he can’t get away from Aunt Beth yet.)

Project Life: Week 19

This is the last week of photos printed from Walgreens. I really like being able to to finish the entire week in one sitting and not having to revisit it three or four weeks later when my photos arrive.

What happened this week: Normal week of work and for the first time since March, Greg was home during the week. I guess that part is not really reflected in the photos, but he did hang our new art on Wednesday night! We bought a BBQ, started working on our front yard, and had friends over to enjoy the summer-like weather.

Though I don’t have a photo of it and didn’t write about it; I think my favorite memory of the week is going out to dinner with Greg on Thursday (family Mexican, of course) and then to get his car washed. It is not normal for us to 1) get to do something together during the week or 2) do something totally normal together. Since we spend so little time at home we pretty much divide and conquer everything and rarely have a chance to work together on a project. I know it’s weird to say washing the car together is ‘fun’, but it was.

Photographers: I took all the photos. With my new phone it’s harder for me to spot the iPhone photos in a spread. I would say this is probably 75% DSLR and the rest iPhone 5.

Outside the Norm: Nothing new but I feel like I’m really finding a way to make this about the pictures and not the scrapbooking, which was the whole intent of starting Project Life. A great example is the Sounders photo. Before I would have written a card about going to the game. But it’s pretty obvious that when you have a picture of the final score of a soccer match (4-0 Sounders, take that San Jose!), you were there.

I’m also using the TimerCam app to capture more self photos. Now that I have a good way of getting myself in each spread, I need to work on making sure Greg is too. Clearly I have no trouble ensuring Alfred makes an appearance each week.

IMG_6081_edited-1IMG_6084_edited-2

I don’t know what happened to my close-up photo of the right side. As I’ve repeatedly said (at least to myself), the only way I both love and am keeping up with this project is that I don’t worry about perfection at all. So I’m not going back and taking another photo of it.

Project Life: Weeks 17 & 18

Two weeks this week. We bought a photo printer for our office this week (okay, I bought one after running it by Greg, I guarantee he will never use it) so now I don’t have to save up several weeks at a time to print through Walgreens. Also, I’m finding it hard to go back and remember anything about a week that happened a month ago (aside from what the pictures tell me), so I’m trying to catch up to more real time.

Week 18

What happened this week: After an insane April of travel (mostly Greg, some me) we had a down weekend with no plans. So happy. We spent lots of time as a family just hanging around the house. We let Alfred play in the front yard a lot, which is his most happy place. Our landscaping did not thank us. Aside from going on a long walk with Talia and Alfred one night, I can’t tell you what happened during the week because my memory no longer functions.

Photographers: Mostly iPhone, though the pictures of Alfred in the front yard are from my DSLR. I took all the photos this week.

Outside the Norm: Nothing, really. Though this is the first week I’ve moved away from documenting every single picture. I’m working on writing down specific things I want to remember, but for the most part letting pictures speak for themselves.

IMG_6076_edited-1Week 19

What happened this week: We had a weekend of down time, so obviously it was time to get back on the road and travel to the East Coast. We took Friday off and visited Mike in New York and Jamie, Julie, & Matt in New Jersey. We also had three rooms of our house painted (dining room, our bedroom, and guest room.)

I think we will always struggle with downtime versus travel; we both love traveling and seeing our people, but it gets exhausting. I struggle with it a lot more than Greg, he could live out of a suitcase for probably two months before it started to wear on him. I feel all out of sorts when we are gone for a weekend, but at the moment it’s a price worth paying. I’m sure kids will force us to slow down, so we’re trying to do as much as we can before they come around. Within reason though. We have probably a weekly text exchange where I send Greg great ideas for weekend travel and he always says yes. Then the next day I respond with why it would be a terrible idea (usually something like it means we’ll be traveling five weekends in a row or the flights are $1,000 each) and he says okay. #lobsters

Photographers: Mostly iPhone, I think I only took one picture with my DSLR (the photo of the Empire State Building from our hotel room). I got my iPhone 5 while we were in New York so I was excited to use the camera. So much better then my 4! Mike took the picture of Greg and I on Saturday night and Greg sent me the picture of the Apple store, the rest were all done by me.

Outside the Norm: Another Design H insert. Seems to be my go-to way of adding extra pictures from a trip. With my home printer I’m hoping to switch it up more, but Design H has 4×6 and 3×4 photos only which are very easy to print via Walgreens without a ton of cropping. In the first photo the insert is on the right and then on the left in the second photo.

I was really worn out after this trip (we took a 7am flight back Monday morning which meant a 4:45 am EDT wake-up call and it just killed me for what felt like an entire week) and spent very little time putting this together. I don’t like the colors much and the photos from our trip really don’t follow a great order. But that’s the beauty of Project Life: This week is done, we can look back and remember it, and I’ve already moved on to the next.

Also, I’d like to bring your attention to what might be the trip with the worst pictures of us ever. I was really bad at taking photos on this trip and the only two I had of us are just awful. But hey, it’s life. On to week 20. IMG_6078_edited-1

Project Life: Week 17

What happened this week: This was an extra fun week as I headed down to LA for Lauren’s baby shower! Catching up with college friends, seeing family, and celebrating the new Smithski adventure – good times.

Photographers: For once I didn’t take all the pictures; my friend Alexis picked up my camera during the shower and made sure we got pictures of everything. Greg also took a few pictures of his weekend at home with the doodle. The vast majority are from my ‘real’ camera or Greg’s iPhone. I used my phone for a few photos.

Outside the Norm: I used a Design H insert since there were so many pictures I wanted to include. It’s half of a regular sheet protector so it blends in to the pictures below. It’s on the right in the first photo (the shower “rehearsal dinner”) and left in the second photo (cake, mimosa bar & happy family).

IMG_2404

IMG_6009_edited-1I also finally finished the title page after scrapping my original digital album. The fillers all came with the Seafoam kit. I added the photos (same as from the digital version – the last 2011 pictures I had of each of us) and used some foam letters left over from Lauren’s shower decor to include 2013 and our one little word. I also bought new albums that are less ‘scrapbooky’ looking than the Project Life ones. I have this sitting on the coffee table and I like it a lot more now that it looks like a normal album.

IMG_6017_edited-1In other Project Life news, I decided to stop working on my 2012 album. I’m not sure there’s anything worse than going back in time and documenting with terrible pictures. Also, I really did not like the Olive kit which was not helping my motivation. Rather than continuing to spend the money and time finishing it, I’m going to admit defeat and move on. I can use my limited creative juices on making our house feel more like our home.

Project Life: Week 16

Week sixteen!

The usual: Greg was in Denver and Alfred spent some time in Redmond with Don and Roberta. The weekend was a Sounders game + lots of cooking.

The unusual: I tried a juice cleanse. I’ve always had a strong opinion on how silly I think they are, so I decided I should try it before continuing bad mouthing them. I lasted 2 out of the 3 days and can confirm that I see no benefit to them.

Project Life: Week 15

For the first time this year, I’m pretty behind. Two or three weeks at this point. April was a long, hard month and I finally gave up on trying to keep up until things calmed down. There’s nothing wrong with doing it down the road, I just lose details of the week’s stories the longer I go before putting the spread together. My memory definitely isn’t what it used to be.

My plan is to enjoy the amazing weather we are having this week (fact: yesterday, Seattle had the highest temp in the nation, tied with Phoenix) and when the low 60s and rain roll back in on Sunday, hole up with some coffee and get myself caught up.

Week 15. I just stepped outside to take photos of this week’s spread and cringed. The week we decided to paint the living room. Awful times a million! My MIL sent a few pictures of Alfred digging up her backyard. And taco salad makes a second appearance in 2013. I might have also eaten it for dinner tonight. IMG_2147_edited-1IMG_2149_edited-1 IMG_2150_edited-1
