Project Life: Week 37

Week 37 (August 5 – August 11)

IMG_6787_edited-2

This was the first normal week we’ve had in a while. Greg had a short trip to Chicago and I started a new project at work. We went to an awesome Sounders game (W over RSL!) on Friday night, had our friends Ryan & Jered over for dinner on Saturday, and met baby Roux on Sunday. Live I’ve been doing with babies, I’ll add a little insert with her birth announcement when it comes.

I haven’t been in a wedding aside from my own since 2007 and in 2014 I will be in two! My good friend Kathy sent this cute little card in anticipation of their wedding next fall. IMG_6789_edited-1This week the weather was in to the 90s for a few days, I’m pretty sure for the last time this year. It was a fun few bonus days of summer but I am really looking forward to everything fall. Maybe there is something to this whole seasons thing?

Supplies used: Seafoam project life kit; Studio Calico Double Scoop kit; label stickers from the Kelly Purkey August + September kit; stamps and free quote cards from EliseJoy.

Summe 2013 Bucket List: Recap!

blog-summer-2013 copyI am so happy I created a bucket list for this summer. Two to three months is my sweet spot for goal planning and making every day count. I think I will keep it going and not try to get back into yearly goals, which never seem to work for me.

This summer was amazing: the weather, what we accomplished, the places and people we were able to visit. I’m sad it’s winding down but I’m thankful I have my PL album to look back on that last few months.

1. Use our ice cream machine to make coconut milk ice cream. Many flavors. // Well, the many flavors didn’t happen, but I did manage to squeeze in vanilla coconut milk ice cream over Labor Day weekend. Greg went au natural, while Becky and I dressed ours up in root beer floats. It was delicious and easy, but I’m glad it requires planning ahead and at least 8 hours to complete. We don’t need ice cream at the ready around here.

2. Finish the front yard and get it to a point where it’s just maintenance. // We did it! We spent several weekends weeding, trimming, mowing, and laying bark. Then we handed the yard over to our wonderful new gardner who is making it shine.

3. Stop wasting food (i.e. use all the food I buy & defrost). Keep summer cooking simple. // I definitely improved though there’s still room for more improvement. Food was simple over the summer but I still found myself cleaning out dead vegetables a few times. Work in progress.

4. Try ten new BBQ recipes. // Going into the summer, I thought this would be what I was most excited to work on. Turns out I really like simple BBQ. Meat + seasoning + veggies = awesome dinner. Recipes mean more grocery shopping, prepping, and cooking. We ate some good food, but going forward I’m sticking to the simplest meals possible on the grill. They are our favorite. lili_PC1_photocollage10_6P

5. Get a fun family self picture. // Not everyone (ahem, husband.) is as into this photo as I am, but I LOVE it. We spent our summer walking with the doodle and this captures it so very well.

IMG_2771

6. Make a fire in our front yard fire pit. Potentially make s’mores. // Done and done. Only once, but with friends and it was fun. And tasty.

7. Walk fifty miles with Alfred (basically, get back in the habit of after work walks). // We did it! By far my favorite bucket list item this summer. We tried new parks, walked with Greg and friends, walked when we were out of town, pretty much walked, walked, walked. The three of us did out fiftieth mile, a lap around “our” park, on Labor Day morning.

8. Hang art in the office. // We got the map wall and I’m calling that success. Greg’s desk has art hanging above it as well, but I haven’t finished mine yet.

IMG_6485

9. Learn to give myself a decent pedicure. // Nope. Didn’t even think about this after I wrote it on the list.

10. Make pull-up progress. // I did! I moved down a band size (smaller band = less help getting up) for WODs, from purple to black. For volume training, I stopped using a band and started doing negative pull-ups (jumping up, then slowly lowering myself down), which I’ve been told is the last step to *finally* getting that one single pull-up on my own.

Project Life: Week 35

Week 35 (August 26 – September 1)

IMG_6676_edited-1Visitors again! After a small ER scare with Maksym on Thursday, the rest of the weekend was all fun and games. We made ice cream, went to the Evergreen State Fair, met Arek for lunch, and hung new artwork on the map wall.

IMG_6678_edited-1

Alfred finally came around to Maks, especially when he realized meal time meant a high likelihood he’d end up with a few dropped bites. By the end of the weekend they were buds, as long as Maks didn’t make any sudden movements.

Supplies used: Seafoam project life kit; Midnight project life kit; Studio Calico Marks & Co. kit; Studio Calico Steinbeck kitKelly Purkey August + September kit; Elise Joy stamps. I love the stamps I’ve bought so far. I am able to use them over and over, which I’m finding is way more affordable than buying one off stamps for single purpose. Good note to self.

Project Life: Week 34

Week 34 (August 19 – August 25)

IMG_6634_edited-1

We had visitors this week! The work week was fairly normal, with the exception of our dryer breaking when we returned home from southern CA. Fun stuff. On Saturday morning I picked up Becky, Arek, and Maks for the airport.

IMG_6635_edited-1

To get ready for their visit, Alfred got a bath. His least favorite activity ever. Oh, and I spent Friday night making a guest book, because I guess that’s what you do in your thirties. We spent Saturday afternoon out on Bainbridge Island, enjoying ice cream and wine tasting. After nearly blowing up the BBQ, we got Thai take-out and played Cards Against Humanity. IMG_6636_edited-1

Sunday morning was pretty lazy but we did get out and walk around Green Lake. Later in the afternoon we headed down town to pick up dinner and watch the Sounders game, which turned out to be the second largest MLS game ever. So much fun and I’m glad Becky and Arek got to see how much Seattle loves soccer.

I have so few pictures from this week even though we had guests. I’m taking this as a sign that I did well living in the moment and enjoying time with my sister and her family.

Supplies used: Seafoam project life kit; Studio Calico Marks & Co. kit; Studio Calico Steinbeck kitKelly Purkey August + September kit. I had a fun time pulling together kraft + pink cards from several kits. I noticed I had two hearts, so added a few more to further tie it all together.

Even before we had picked a house I was scheming about creating a wall collage of the various city maps we’ve collected. When we found our home I knew the perfect wall was above the couch in the office. We spend the vast majority of our time at home in the office and these prints are our favorites, so why wouldn’t we combine.

IMG_3027

I saw a genius idea on Pinterest a while ago to map out a photo collage using brown packing paper before committing to nails in the wall. It makes the project so much easier and there are only a few extra nail holes in our wall. I traced each frame onto paper, cut them out, then wrote the print title. Using painters tape, I put them up and rearranged, measured, and tweaked until we were happy.

IMG_6471_edited-1 I love how our office is coming along. Hopefully soon I’ll post our desks. Greg’s is done but mine is still waiting for a few finishing touches. I probably have more finishing touches left than Greg has touches in total on his, but we are both quite happy with our little spaces.

IMG_6485My view from the couch as I plan what we can add next. Most of the fun is finding prints that we both love and mean something to us. I hope by the time we move someday the wall is a crazy mess of cities we love. And with this I get to check one more item off the summer bucket list.

Week 31 (July 29 – August 4)

IMG_6506_edited-2

What happened this week: We had a pretty normal work week with Greg home. I think we were both home three evenings in a row, which might be a 2013 record. Over the weekend Greg headed to Suncadia for Guys Golf Weekend. I stayed in Seattle and enjoyed lots of time with girl friends and got some more house decorating tackled. My MIL had Alfred all weekend – on Saturday I left the house at 11:30 am and wasn’t home until 11pm. I don’t know the last time that happened.

IMG_6505_edited-2

Photography: With the exception of the house photo and the pizza photo, everything is from our iPhones. Greg took about half the photos in the insert.

Proof that there is no such thing as perfection in PL. I got a new date stamp and clearly it is above my intelligence level.

IMG_6502_edited-1

Out of the norm: I’ve been wanting to do a ‘day in the life’ spread for a while. I think it will be fun to do them every once in a while and see how life changes over time. Greg was totally on board and sent my six or seven pictures throughout his day on Tuesday. I picked from the 20ish pictures we ended up with and created the insert.

Untitled-1_edited-1

Because we were taking so many photos on Tuesday, I decided to go with one large photo for the right hand side. (Credit for this idea goes to Elise, I believe I first saw this when she did it to bookend a week in the life spread.) Our house seemed like the perfect subject. I haven’t taken any photos of it from the outside and it’s definitely been central to our lives the last eight months. I love larger photos split across multiple pockets. And I love our house.

IMG_6495_edited-2

Supplies used: Seafoam project life kit; Midnight project life kit; the ampersand card is from the Studio Calico July kit; his and hers stamps from Elise Joy; Happiness Right Here frame stamp is from the Kelly Purkey August + September kit; a day in the life card is free from Ali Edwards; we were here card is from Paislee Press; quote card free from Elise Joy.

Project Life: Week 30

Week 30 (July 22 – July 28)

IMG_6422_edited-2

And now we’re at week 30. Documenting these summer months has been and continues to be so much fun. It might seem silly that I’m taking so many very similar pictures, but there’s a method to the madness. It’s no secret I struggle through February to May living in the PNW. My hope is that next year when I’m having a hard time I’ll be able to look through all these weeks. I’ll remember that for a pretty decent chunk of the year there is nowhere better to live, that we eat so many meals outside, that it stays light out for 18 hours a day, that we walk everywhere, that we BBQ nonstop, and that the sun shines every day.

IMG_6428_edited-2

What happened this week: We had friends over for a BBQ and used our fire pit for the first time to make s’mores. We had new bedroom furniture delivered and after an epic trip to IKEA filled rooms with lamps and other accessories. And we got outside as much as possible. I had dinner with a good friend from San Francisco who was in town for work.

IMG_6427_edited-2Photography: About 50/50 between my camera and phone. I’m pretty sure I took all the pictures.IMG_6430_edited-1

Out of the norm: I created a little insert of the three parks we visited this week. I cut the “Remember This” off of a journal card and stapled it to the insert to use as a tab.

IMG_6424_edited-1 IMG_6432_edited-1

Supplies used: Seafoam project life kit; the Today I and July calendar cards, We Were Here badge, and letter stickers are from the Studio Calico July kit; the See Go Do card is from an add-on kit to the July SC kit but looks like it’s no longer available.
IMG_6426_edited-1

I finally figured out the settings required to open the pictures larger and in a new tab. They should all be clickable now.

the secret to ikea

we learned the secret to an enjoyable ikea trip this weekend : go when the weather is really nice. it’s more than worth it to lose a few hours of seattle summer for a stress-free trip to the giant blue building. IMG_2921_edited-1

we ended up with two carts, even though half the items on our list didn’t end up working out.
IMG_2922_edited-1

fiddle leaf fig, i love you.IMG_2929-1_edited-1

but the real winner of the day : my new turquoise craft cart.

IMG_2927_edited-1

fun new lamp for the living room. IMG_2925_edited-1

and proof we didn’t waste the whole day in ikea. another five mile walk around green lake with the doodle. there are so many lily pads and not a cloud in the sky.

Project Life: Week 29

Week 29 (July 15 – July 21)

It seems unreal that we’re approaching week 30. Also, it’s twenty nine weeks in and I’m still struggling to find a good spot in our house to take decent photos of the album.

IMG_6411-1_edited-2

What happened this week: The usual – lots of walking, a Sounders game, doodle antics, and new BBQ recipe trying. We cleaned out the garage finally and enjoyed an afternoon at the Allegre’s baby shower.

IMG_6412-1_edited-1

Photography: Mostly iPhone with a few DSLR and 10:1 Beth to Greg; Greg documented the garage clean out process.

IMG_6413-1_edited-1

Out of the norm: Nothing very different than usual. I made the “life is so good right now” card on the far right. The blurred out card is just a description of what Greg and I are both doing at work right now. I thought it would be fun down the road to look back and read that, especially given how often we change roles. And my personal set of internet rules includes keeping work off the internet.

Supplies used: Seafoam project life kit; Elise Joy I LOVE and *You Are Here stamps and free download quote cards; the wood grain card and stickers are from the Studio Calico July kit. (I love the Studio Calico kit – for $18 a month I get a few supplies in the mail to keep things interesting.)

summer goal : fire & s’mores

we had the foremans and kays over for a bbq on friday night, the perfect start to a weekend.IMG_2914_edited-1the previous owners left wood in the fireplace and i was determined to have a least one fire this summer. greg did not disappoint and got an awesome fire going.

IMG_2915_edited-1

my extra credit goal (what, you don’t have those?) was to make s’mores.
IMG_2908_edited-1

cameron made himself not one but two s’mores. it was our first time having friends’ kids over to our house. apparently grapefruit pellegrino in a coffee mug is not a six year old’s idea of a soda treat. lesson learned.IMG_2910_edited-1

this city girl taught these country people how to roast marshmallows the LA way : on coat hangers. IMG_2913

summer perfection.
